The dominating influence of light for the production of milk has been proved in a great number of scientific surveys on the impact of light on the biological processes of cows for milk yield. Those surveys show very good results in fields like:
production of milk by milk-yielding animals; influence on the puberty in young cows; production of milk in breast-feeding dairy cows; improvement of the health status of the animals; consumption of forage and productivity of milk-yielding animals.

Based on these surveys, IRA-D developed a program for lighting of cows in the period of lactation. The used program for lighting consists of a sequence of light regimes. This sequence is consistent with the age of the cows, their lactation of dry period, sexual maturity, etc. The program exerts its influence through the three main light factors:

Photoperiod: Depending on the age, dry or lactation period, the sexual maturity of the cows, the respective wave length of the photoperiod is selected /light and dark time of the twenty-four-hour period/.

Intensity of light: The intensity of light is calculated in such values that the light period is to be perceived by the cow as a day and the dark one – as night.

Light spectrum: The program works with two main spectra of light / white light and LED red light /. The first light stimulates the process of milk secretion in cows and the second one prepares the cows for night’s rest, relaxation and full restoration of the organism.
